Obviously inspired by Rosemary's Baby, filmmaker Matt Bettinelli-Olpin's Devil's Due revolves around a newlywed who is impregnated by the devil on her honeymoon, employing the tired found-footage formula but cheating along the way. Much of what we see is supposedly filmed by Zach (Zach Gilford), the husband of expectant Samantha (Allison Miller), who apparently has a camera pinned to himself. But even his voluminous footage proves insufficient to keep the plot rolling, so the dark coven behind Samantha's condition secretly installs a battery of cameras in the couple's home. And even that's not enough: when Samantha goes into the woods to gut a few deer and gobble up their innards, the action is suddenly seen through the lens of a goofy teen who just happens to be there. Of course, no explanation is offered for who exactly collected this disparate material. No matter: what's going on isn't terribly interesting, and Zach and Samantha aren't characters so much as bland sketches. Playing like fodder made for the Syfy or Chiller networks, this is not recommended. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include deleted scenes and an extended ending (11 min.), and trailers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release are an audio commentary with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and executive producers Chad Villella and Justin Martinez, deleted scenes (17 min.), “Radio Silence: A Hell of a Team” on the crew (12 min.), a “Director's Photo Album,” and bonus DVD and UltraViolet copies of the film. Bottom line: a solid extras package for a lame horror flick.] (F. Swietek)
