"If you could cure cancer by killing one person, wouldn't you have to do that?" This ethical dilemma is at the heart of this paranoiac suspense thriller. Hugh Grant exhibits true Brit as Dr. Guy Luthan, who in the classic Hitchcock tradition, unwittingly finds himself embroiled in sinister activities he doesn't comprehend. Though he shares top billing, Gene Hackman has comparatively little screen time, but he makes the menacing most of it as Dr. Lawrence Myrick, a celebrated Nobel Prize-winner who conducts a very private practice performing deadly experiments on human subjects he deems expendable. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
