After an unusually eerie and amply terrifying plane crash opening, the Twilight Zone-like plot of Final Destination sadly degrades into a typical, tiresome terror flick about a handful of nondescript, expendable teenagers who survived the disaster only to be stalked by an unseen force determined to make them meet their fate. X-Files veteran director James Wong toys with transcending the genre, but succumbs to pruning his characters in mundane splatter episodes grafted from a dozen equally dull scare movie predecessors. Although the film boasts a name teen cast, including Devon Sawa (Idle Hands) and Ali Larter (Varsity Blues), this one's a skipper. (R. Blackwelder)
