After ditching her middle-aged fiancé at the altar, a troubled young woman named France (César nominee Sandrine Kiberlain) takes off with a briefcase full of his cash on a journey of self-discovery. Flitting through several French cities before ending up in New York, she is pursued by a private detective with a few inner demons of his own. In fact, the gumshoe, after talking to the woman's parents and former boyfriend, finds himself romantically drawn to his quarry even as he learns about the runaway bride's checkered past--including her self-empowering habit of charging lovers for sex. Unfolding largely in flashbacks, this rather intriguing, if at times inscrutable, psychological drama merits a strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
