Fifteen-year-old Fred Figglehorn (YouTube sensation Lucas Cruikshank) wears suspenders and speaks in a grating high-pitched voice, which might explain why he doesn't have any friends and instead spends his time conjuring up imaginary scenarios involving his absent father (WWE wrestler John Cena). Mostly, Fred nurses a crush on shapely blonde Judy (British pop star Pixie Lott), making it his mission to find out where she lives (and win her over), while dodging bully Kevin (Jake Weary), and Bertha (Jennette McCurdy), a smart-ass with a heart of gold. Since his mother discourages swearing, Fred utters “Oh, my gammit!” enough times for the irritating interjection to qualify as a catchphrase. It's clear that Cruikshank and director Clay Weiner are aiming for the sort of surreal humor that made Nickelodeon's The Adventures of Pete and Pete a cult favorite—and, yes, the talking deer here is an amusing touch—but there's little charm evident, although younger viewers seem to find Fred appealing (his online videos have garnered millions of hits). Worse, Fred appears to have substantial emotional problems, given his frequent tantrums involving screaming, jumping up and down, and throwing things. For all but fans, Fred will be fairly unbearable. Optional. (K. Fennessy)
