Forget that failed, F/X-driven Hollywood Godzilla from 1998, this new Japanese import is what Godzilla movies are all about: low production values, high camp and a guy in a giant rubber reptile suit stomping through a detailed miniature of Tokyo, knocking down buildings, kicking cars and breathing fire! Yeah, that's the stuff! Special effects? Improved with dough made from the American version, but cheesy nonetheless. Dubbing? Comical. Dialogue? Worse. Acting? Even worse. Plot? Complicated nonsense: Godzilla battles an alien ship, which--after lying dormant for millennia on the bottom of the ocean--suddenly wakes up and attacks Japan. Is this quality cinema? Of course not. It's garbage. The point is, you'll cheer, laugh, throw popcorn at the TV and have a great time. (R. Blackwelder)[Blu-ray Review—Sept. 9, 2014—Sony, 99 min., PG, $19.99—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1999's Godzilla 2000 features a nice transfer and a DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack. Featuring both the Japanese and U.S. versions of the film, extras include audio commentary by writer Michael Schlesinger, editor Michael Mahoney, and supervising sound editor Darren Paskal, a behind-the-scenes featurette (2 min.), and trailers. Bottom line: a fun Godzilla flick makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
