One of the more successful entries in the current series of Shakespeare's plays recorded at London's restored Globe Theatre, Dominic Dromgoole's 2010 production of the first part of Henry IV cannily balances the lighter scenes featuring dissolute nobleman Falstaff (Roger Allam) and the more serious ones centered on the rebellion against the recently crowned Lancastrian king, Henry IV (Oliver Cotton). The figure that straddles the two worlds is heir apparent Prince Hal (Jamie Parker), recalled to filial duty from his attachment to Falstaff's wastrel ways by the threat that the uprising poses to his father. Parker effortlessly manages the transition from callow youth to determined warrior, and his final face-off against impetuous Hotspur (Sam Crane) is staged with real dash, while Cotton strikes a properly regal attitude. But Allam dominates, capturing the undercurrent of pain beneath Falstaff's braggadocio and bringing out the ruefulness as well as the humor in the character's famous speech about honor. Dromgoole goes for laughs whenever he can—both in spots where the Bard obviously intended them and in others where the intent is less clear. But he also ensures that the cast attends to the verse with exceptional care. The physical production is spare, with relatively few props—mostly banners, and the occasional piece of furniture—adorning the small stage. But the text is what matters, and this mounting does it proud. Highly recommended. [Note: Henry IV, Part 2 is also newly available.] Aud: H, C, P. (F. Swietek)
