This one-woman stage performance written and presented by mezzo soprano Linn Maxwell tells the story of Hildegard of Bingen, a medieval nun and mystic who was canonized in 2012. Maxwell traces Hildegard's life from her childhood, when she first experienced religious visions, up through her death in 1179. Simple, darkened sets are used to suggest monastery quarters, an altar, and Hildegard's apothecary; she was a healer who relied upon natural remedies, as well as a prophet, writer, and musician. Maxwell's singing voice is powerful as she performs several of Hildegard's musical compositions, accompanying herself on authentic medieval instruments. As Hildegard's reputation as a religious leader grew through her writings, she challenged male church authorities, defying their decrees and agitating for reform; quoting from Hildegard's work, Maxwell beautifully conveys the nun's tart eloquence and confidence in her arguments (often received directly from God). Her Hildegard is a determined, pious woman, but also joyful, accessible, and often wryly humorous. DVD extras include bonus interviews with scholars, who address Maxwell's play, Hildegard's canonization, her visions, and feminine motifs in her writing, as well as a discussion of Hildegard's homilies on the Gospels. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (M. Puffer-Rothenberg)
