The zero in the title of this Spanish import (which refers to the spot in Madrid's Plaza de Sol from which distances are measured in all directions; in kilometers, of course) seems appropriate, given that the movie is ultimately a fairly weightless, empty concoction. Initially a bunch of strangers link up in the wrong combinations after each has arranged to meet someone (a friend's brother, a prostitute, a blind date) at the titular site, but over the course of the film all of the principals find their way to a neighborhood bar, where they're properly coupled at last. Km. 0 boasts a personable ensemble cast, and some of its twists are amusing enough (though others are in rather poor taste), but the film ultimately develops a terminal case of the cutes, even taking a supernatural turn in an effort to reach for a gossamer, magical tone. Although it has a candy-colored look that's easy on the eye, and features a bouncy score, Km. 0 winds up being just one more of those romantic roundelays that depend too heavily on coincidence and contrivance to reach an undeserved happy ending.
