Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, Claude Lelouch's epic saga re-imagines Victor Hugo's classic novel to illustrate its universality in speaking to new generations. Screen icon Jean-Paul Belmondo gives a bravura performance in a triple role. He portrays Fortin, a man unjustly imprisoned for murder. He also portrays Fortin's son, who learns of Hugo's novel from a Jewish family that he agrees to help flee the Nazis. In dramatized scenes from the book, Belmondo appears as the wrongly convicted Valjean. Recommended. (K. Benson)
