Amidst the gorgeous mountains of inner Mongolia, two itinerant blind musicians--an old master and his young apprentice--express themselves through singing and banjo playing in a quest for enlightenment (and to fulfill a prophecy claiming that the players' eyesight will be restored once the 1000th banjo string is broken). As with most philosophical journeys, the world rushes in--the young pupil begins an affair with a village woman, the old man combats failing health, and the pair inadvertently stumble into a massive battle. Visually striking, but emotionally remote, this low-key drama vividly contrasts with director Chen Kaige's earlier lavish melodrama, the much more engaging Farewell My Concubine. The DVD transfer is passable, with occasional graininess and specks marring the otherwise luscious cinematography. A strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
