With former Bond girl and X-Men babe Famke Janssen playing a romantically frustrated fashion mag writer who's rehashing a catalog of failed relationships as do-it-yourself therapy, Love & Sex plays a bit like a chick-flick version of High Fidelity. But instead of being self-deprecating and funny, Janssen just whines, occasionally regurgitating a sound bite observation about modern romance while she wallows in the flotsam of her most recent breakup (with mutton-chopped Jon Favreau of Swingers fame). Despite appealing performances, the characters are not much more than sketches of clever, charming people, and the sitcom-y shallowness ultimately sinks this awkward first effort from writer-director Valerie Breiman. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Blackwelder)
