Pro golfer Lionel Exley (Campbell Scott) finds himself in the deep rough when his latest drunken binge lands him in prison for six months. Returning to his native New Orleans after serving time, Exley buddies up with a fellow alcoholic and suicidally depressed lawyer (Jared Harris). When the besotted barrister turns up missing, Exley, who's been hustling country club duffers--and bedding a prominent socialite (Laura Linney)--ends up as the prime suspect. A plethora of inebriated characters in this barely released 1999 dramatic comedy provide less than ideal company for a sober (re)viewer; still, there is just enough clever dialogue and decent acting to save this hazardous round from a bogey. Definitely optional. (T. Rich)
