Made of Honor

In Made of Honor, Patrick Dempsey—the wildly popular “Dr. McDreamy” of Grey's Anatomy—is ideally cast as Tom Bailey, a handsome and successful ladies' man whose only longtime (since college) female friend is the one woman he's never been able to bed: erstwhile art student Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). Tom takes Hannah more or less for granted, until she leaves for Scotland on a business trip, and returns with a handsome hunk of Scottish nobleman (Kevin McKidd) as her fiancé. In a development plausible only in a romantic comedy, Hannah asks her male BFF to be her maid of honor—a responsibility that places Tom in close proximity to Hannah for an extended period of time and convinces him that she's picked the wrong guy. The film's third act mostly unfolds in and around a picturesque Scottish castle, climaxing with the requisite confession of love in a humiliatingly public setting. Although Dempsey and Monaghan don't share great chemistry, separately both are appealing performers whose fine work lifts this programmatic romcom slightly above the routine.
