Following the wild success of the comedy golf tape Dorf on Golf, which, despite its popularity, is no side-splitter-this program attempts to mine a similar financial vein. Based on the book by Ed West, the video stars Tom Poston as George, an affably dumb golf novitiate who runs into predictable problems on the golf course, when he becomes the fourth member of a foursome that includes golf sharp Roscoe (David Doyle). Periodically, the video shows cue cards with sayings from West's book ("Any club, once chosen, is the wrong one," "The more expensive the ball, the sooner it's lost," etc.) Unfortunately, the cue cards turn out to be-with the exception of one scene involving a slow-motion replay-the only thing funny about the program. To make matters worse, this program adheres rigidly to the modern rule of comic thumb: if you can't be funny, be offensive. So we're given tastelessly sexist jokes (a golf ball landing in a woman's cleavage) and elderly jokes (an elderly woman using a walker plays before the impatient quartet on one hole). W. C. Fields did this much better, years ago. Not recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
