Anyone who's ever snickered at a bad movie will find lots to love in this extended version of the cult TV show. On a spaceship, Michael J. Nelson and his robot sidekicks watch and criticize This Island Earth, a cheesy 1950's sci-fi picture. Mystery Science Theater 3000 incorporates different types of jokes, from juvenile toilet humor to sharp satire (i.e., our heroes note the resemblance between a skeleton and Kate Moss, and an alien monster and Leona Helmsley). The film only falters when it interrupts the movie criticism with a stupid and unnecessary subplot involving a mad doctor who wants to control the universe. Recommended. (L. Russo)[Blu-ray Review—Aug. 27, 2013—Shout! Factory, 74 min., PG-13, $29.95—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1996's Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie sports a nice transfer and DTS-HD 5.1 audio. Extras include a “This Island Earth: 2½ Years in the Making” production featurette (36 min.), “The Motion Picture Odyssey” retrospective “making-of” featurette (33 min.), deleted scenes (23 min.), another “making-of” featurette (5 min.), a bonus DVD copy of the film, and trailers. Bottom line: MST3K's big screen movie makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
