Andrew Bujalski's atypical rom-com provides a rare leading role for longtime second-tier actor Kevin Corrigan—one that suits his shambling, goofy persona perfectly. The story revolves around an Austin, TX, gym that is run by enthusiastic trainer Trevor (Guy Pearce). Trevor's most popular employee is Kat (Cobie Smulders), a super-fit woman who is sometimes a mite too aggressive. The pair bicker like Tracy and Hepburn, but they are obviously simpatico even though they resist becoming a couple. Enter Danny (Corrigan), a beefy, just-divorced, very wealthy transplant from New York who comes into the gym to arrange an exercise regimen. It soon becomes obvious that Danny is far more interested in Kat—who becomes his personal trainer—than in building up his muscles. Kat rejects his advances, and Trevor confronts Danny, but in an unexpected turn, the two men become friends and eventually business partners. Bujalski toys with genre conventions in such a low-key, unassuming way that the pattern is barely perceptible until everything falls into place, taking the viewer by surprise. Recommended.
