Despite the above-the-title presence of Daniel Defoe's name, this 1996 shelved film bears only passing resemblance to the classic novel. Starring Pierce Brosnan, the production feels more like a made-for-TV movie than a big-screen outing--save for the touch of nudity in a scene with Crusoe's left-behind ladylove (Polly Walker). Nonetheless, a properly hair-extensioned Brosnan acquits himself well enough as the shipwrecked hero; so, too, does William Takaku as Man Friday. Told in flashback with diary entries extensively narrated, this pre-TV "survivor" is definitely optional. (T. Rich)
