You'd think a movie starring Mira Sorvino, Lisa Kudrow, and Janeane Garofalo would be pretty darn funny, right? This film is an excellent reminder that hilarious actors alone aren't sufficient--you also need at least a mildly humorous script. The premise isn't awful: two down-on-their-luck airheads try to con their former classmates into believing that they're rich and successful. The trouble involves the laugh-out-loud jokes and gags: there aren't any. At one point, the picture does finally seem to be building up a head of steam, but it then unaccountably stops dead in its tracks for an unfunny dream sequence so extended that you could easily use the bathroom, feed the cat, make some microwave popcorn, realize you're out of salt, get in the car, drive to the supermarket, buy some salt, drive back home, salt the popcorn, use the bathroom again, and still make it back to the couch before Kudrow opens her eyes and groggily shakes her head. Possibly the year's biggest waste of comedic talent. Not recommended. (M. D'Angelo)
