“When you're fourteen years old, everything is hard,” reads the suggestive ad copy for the latest in a long line of sexual coming-of-age flicks. This undistinguished direct-to-video entry deals with an avid reader (and aspiring writer) named Sam (Bug Hall) who wonders about the sex scenes left out of his favorite classic novels. Living in a small Wyoming town, circa 1963, along with his Southern-born mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Sam's eagerness to learn about sex is abetted by a willing female schoolmate (Mischa Barton), inspiration from a fantasy girl (Drew Barrymore), and advice from good ol' understanding mom (who uses a taco shell as a visual aid for a vagina). A smarmy mix of faux innocence and clinical sex talk, this is an embarrassment for everyone concerned. Not recommended. (T. Rich)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
