“If it were not for…the United States,” William Henry Harrison wrote, “Tecumseh would be the founder of an empire that would rival in glory Mexico or Peru.” Even his bitterest enemies admired Tecumseh, a Shawnee leader who believed the only way to contain land-grabbing Americans was to unify the woodland tribes of the Old Northwest. After Tecumseh attacked Harrison's militia at Tippecanoe Creek in 1811, Harrison responded by ordering the burning of Prophet's Town, Tecumseh's headquarters. When the War of 1812 broke out, Tecumseh allied with the British Army in Canada in hopes of defeating the Americans, but was killed in battle instead. Featuring the best re-enactment footage I've ever seen in an educational market video and music reminiscent of The Last of the Mohicans (indeed, this program's producer worked on the movie), this otherwise excellent program in the Native Americans & Frontiersmen series includes one flaw: the narrative implies that Harrison was a Christian racist for questioning Tecumseh's brother's claim to be a prophet (Harrison actually did so because Tenskwatawa was leading witch-hunts against women of neighboring tribes, burning some over slow fires on the basis of his authority as a prophet). Ultimately, Tenskwatawa rose to Harrison's challenge and “made” the sun stand still (a total eclipse) embarrassing Harrison and gaining converts among the skeptical. Highly recommended. The other titles in the series are: Long Knives, Pontiac and Roger's Rangers. Aud: I, J, H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
