Tom Hanks wrote, directed and appears in this bittersweet and fondly nostalgic comedy that charts the rise and fall of the fictional 1964 pop sensation, the Wonders. Put simply, this is a nice movie that the whole family will enjoy. There is not a trace of irony or cynicism in its breezy 108 minutes. It is as good-natured as Hanks is storied to be, and as infectious as the catchy, Oscar-nominated title tune. A strong optional purchase. (K. Lee Benson)[DVD Review—May 15, 2007—Fox, 2 discs, 108 min., not rated, $19.98—Making its second appearance on DVD, 1996's That Thing You Do! (Tom Hanks' Extended Cut) sports a great transfer and Dolby Digital 5.0 surround sound. DVD extras include both the original theatrical cut and director Hanks' extended cut, a 31-minute “The Story of the Wonders” documentary, a 14-minute “making-of” featurette, HBO's First Look behind-the-scenes featurette (13 min.), 10 minutes of “That Thing You Do! Reunion” interviews with the cast (10 min.), “The Wonders—Big in Japan!” featurette on the promo tour in Japan (7 min.), the “Feel Alright” music video by Josh Clayton-Felt, and trailers. Bottom line: a fine extras package for a winsome film.]
