It is a few hours before the 20th-century. The rapturously beautiful Francesca (Ines Sastre) is getting married to Edgardo (Dario Cantarelli), a wealthy older man, and her bourgeois parents are going to party like it's 1899. But Francesca is a most reluctant bride, especially after she gazes upon Angelo, the best man, just returned to his hometown after earning his fortune in the United States. Knowing the dire financial consequences should she refuse to marry Edgardo (not to mention the scandal), she goes through with the wedding, but recites her vows staring at Angelo. The movie is not quite clear whether Francesca is some latter-day Adele H or a portent of the modern woman. But this Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Film is a lavish and delightful affair. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
