It's just like Hollywood to take a perfect, wonderfully nasty and tragic scenario and follow it to its happy, unrealistic, unnatural conclusion. The story of three wives (Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton) out to exact revenge after being tossed aside by their husbands for younger women, The First Wives Club, based on the bestselling novel by Olivia Goldsmith, deals in stereotypes and black-and-white situations. The husbands--obviously--are the dark villains, while the wives are the innocent victims. It takes two to tango, but the women don't accept responsibility for their own part in the dissolution of their marriages. It's hard to take pleasure in a revenge fantasy based so entirely on caricatures. Not recommended. (L. Russo)
