On of the best action films of the year, The Rock is one wild ride. Nicolas Cage plays a chemical weapons expert who is teamed up with a dangerous convict (Sean Connery) to stop an insane general (Ed Harris) from killing everyone in San Francisco. They have a day to overtake Alcatraz, release the hostages, disarm the chemical weapons, and restore peace. Highly stylized with non-stop tension, the film is funny, exciting, and violent. Cage and Connery make a dynamic duo, while Harris has the psycho Marine mentality down. Director Michael Bay has a talent for pacing, and creates explosive, fight-to-the-finish moments that don't miss a beat. In a genre bogged down by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicles, The Rock pounds the life back into action flicks. (L. Russo)
