Unlike any real-life marriage--especially a marriage on the rocks--The Story of Us is a 100-percent predictable romantic dramedy about a married couple's 15 year itch. Even though the film is obliging, honest and well-acted by its leads, Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, director Rob Reiner is pathetically faithful to formula as he weaves a Hallmark card of matrimony montages with the framing story of a trial separation. Ultimately this couple are never more than one emotional catharsis away from reconciliation, so the outcome of the picture is never in question. It's as if the script came as a part of some prefabricated Instant Movie Kit labeled "just add actors." Not recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
