After almost 90 minutes of stodgy "what was that?" jump-frights and a whole lot of foot dragging, there is exactly one chilling conceptual payoff moment to close this nightmare-themed shoulder shrug of a horror movie. But it's hardly worth sitting through the plot about three college kids who had night terrors as kids in which evil somethings came to drag them away in the dark ("that's when they marked us, and now they're back!" shrieks our stick-thin, bob-haired, primary heroine Julia, played by Laura Regan). Whatever "they" are, they're pretty inept at getting what they want--which, apparently, is to abduct our protagonists--as these vaguely blob-ish, leathery, tentacled monsters (they never come into any kind of light) pass up several perfectly good opportunities to snatch Julia (but don't because then the flick would be over). If the entire film was even half as disquieting as the final 30 seconds, this could have been a really scary B-movie; as it is, however, They isn't likely to satisfy anyone but horror movie junkies with very low standards. Not recommended. [DVD extras include a four-minute alternate ending and trailers. Bottom line: a skimpy extras package for an instantly forgettable horror flick.] (R. Blackwelder)
