Writer-director Christopher Guest and his friends garnered both critical acclaim and very respectable box office numbers with the 2000 dog-show send up Best In Show, easily the most entertaining film released last year, but that same comic ensemble made their debut in 1996 with the equally hilarious and eagerly awaited on DVD Waiting For Guffman. Guest plays bright lights and big city Broadway producer Corky St. Clair, who together with the stage-struck local yokels of Blaine, Missouri--Fred Willard, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, et. al.--mounts "Red, White and Blaine," a way off-beat musical celebration of that burg's sesquicentennial. Featuring an audio commentary by Guest and co-writer and star Eugene Levy, and deleted scenes that fans will not want to miss, this disc showcases the most talented ensemble of comic actors working today. Take heart laffer lovers! American comedy isn't sleeping, it was just Waiting for Guffman. Highly recommended. (S. C. Sickles)[Blu-ray Review—Oct. 17, 2017—Warner, 84 min., R, Blu-ray: $19.99—Making its Blu-ray debut, 1996's Waiting for Guffman features a fine transfer and a DTS-HD 2.0 soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary by director/star Christopher Guest and costar Eugene Levy, and additional scenes (34 min.). Bottom line: Guest's beloved cult mockumentary makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
