Indie-goddesses Catherine Keener and Anne Heche star as Amelia and Laura, whose lifelong friendship is strained when Laura announces that she is engaged. Writer and director Nicole Holofcener's idiosyncratic dialogue (at one point, a babbling Amelia complains her kitchen sponge smells like a hot dog) and quirky characters refuse to conform to Hollywood formula. The men in their lives are just as sympathetically drawn. One of the most memorable characters in years is Bill (Kevin Corrigan), a video store clerk and horror film geek who Amelia, to her regret, judges by his misfit appearance. Recommended. (K. Bottom line: a bargain-priced re-release of a winning indie film.]
