High school buddies Dan (Jon Cryer) and Stan (Rick Stear) set out to find a fellow classmate, Richie (Rafael Baez), who has disappeared without a trace. Supposedly living out of a garbage dump by the Coney Island amusement park, Richie is rumored to be bonkers. In an earnest but contrived journey of self-discovery, the pair amble towards their quarry while engaging in various hijinks along the way. Scattered flashbacks to their shared boyhood and the occasional pensive voice-over try to put a poignant perspective on their relationship, but the story (co-written by Cryer) remains stillborn. The picture is none too sharp looking either on this DVD-only release. Not recommended. (T. Rich) [Blu-ray Review—May 29, 2018—Music Video Distributors, 94 min., R, Blu-ray: $29.95—Making its debut on Blu-ray, 1998’s Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God…Be Back by Five features a fine transfer with a 5.1 uncompressed audio soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary by director Richard Schenkman and star Jon Cryer, an intro by Schenkman and Cryer (2 min.), a behind-the-scenes featurette (19 min.), Schenkman’s comedy short "The Producer" (3 min.), a photo gallery, and a mini-poster. Bottom line: a forgettable ‘90s film receives a handsome Blu-ray release.]
