A professional cat burglar (Martin Lawrence) is caught breaking into the mansion of a crooked media tycoon (Danny DeVito) who, just for spite, steals a ring from the robber as the cops take him away. Determined to get the bauble back (it was a gift from his girlfriend), Lawrence escapes and begins an antic, escalating battle of wits with DeVito, who will stop at nothing to keep the ring as a spoil of war. The two actors have superb chemistry as comedic combatants as Lawrence crashes a hoity-toity banquet, busts up DeVito's condo and follows him to Washington, D.C. to embarrass him in front of a Senate hearing looking into corruption in his media empire monopoly. While the film eventually veers into implausible shtick and a lazy finish, it stays reliably funny because of its cast of great comedians, including John Leguizamo, Glenne Headly, Larry Miller, Bernie Mac, Ana Gasteyer, Siobhan Fallon and William Fichtner in a tasteless but hilarious role as a very fey dandy of a police detective. A strong optional purchase. (R. Extras include a “Scene Stealers” production featurette (25 min.), the music video “Music” by Eric Sermon featuring Marvin Gaye, and trailers. Bottom line: this often funny buddy flick makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
