A medieval war epic focusing on a pivotal chapter of Chinese history, filmmaker Daniel Lee's White Vengeance tells the story of two friends, sworn as brothers, who vie for control of the capital city of Xianyang—and the love of the same woman—during the final years of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC). An insurgent rebellion threatens the vast empire of Lord Qin, with warriors Liu Bang (Leon Lai) and Xiang Yu (Feng Shaofeng) leading the rebel army in the service of King Huai of Chu city—only Huai winds up pitting Bang and Yu against each other. While digital wizardry is used to good effect in several epic-scale battle scenes, the film's geopolitical complexity occasionally makes this a tough slog, as the plot becomes mired in a confusing abundance of historical detail and duplicitous characters. A strong optional purchase. (J. Shannon)
