If you haven't lost interest in this half-hearted food-as-magic romantic comedy by the time the clumsy 10 minutes of introductory narration is finally over, you soon will. The plot follows Penelope Cruz (All About My Mother) as she runs away from a cheating husband in Brazil, lands in San Francisco with her drag queen best friend (Harold Perrineau, Jr.) and dumb-lucks her way into a job hosting a cooking show on a local TV station. With an undeniably charming and irresistible magnetic star like Cruz, the picture is bursting with potential. But the recipe for Woman on Top is so full of overripe ingredients and antiquated B-comedy artifice that not one scene rings true, romantic or even funny. Not recommended. (R. Blackwelder)
