A dry, deadpan horror-comedy that is written, directed by, and stars web-series success Ingrid Jungermann, Women Who Kill is a mostly funny but sometimes unsettling tale about relationships. Brooklynites Morgan (Jungermann) and Jean (Ann Carr) are ex-lovers who still live together and co-host a popular podcast (called “Women Who Kill”) during which they discuss female serial killers and debate their relative hotness. Before the core story begins, Morgan and Jean pay a visit to a prison where a compulsive murderer—played with slithering evil by Annette O'Toole—sets the tone of imminent mayhem that lurks behind Jungermann's snappy dialogue and romantic entanglements. When Morgan meets the mysterious Simone (Sheila Vand), who practically wears a sign that says “femme fatale,” she is drawn into a dark romance that Jean finds suspicious. Jean uncovers some facts about Simone that raise the question of whether she is a serial killer, a possibility that Morgan naturally dismisses as Jean's jealousy. But, over time, paranoia continues to grow until no one—including viewers—quite knows the truth. Jungermann balances the thriller aspects with brazen comedy that is built around Shannon Patricia O'Neill as a foul-mouthed Melissa McCarthy-like friend. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
