Scientists declared the ivory-billed woodpecker extinct in the 1940s, but people have claimed sightings over the years—though no definitive photographic evidence exists. Alex Karpovsky's hybrid documentary-narrative feature focuses on a housepainter and amateur poet named Johnny (Jon E. Hyrns, Johnny Berlin), who frequents the swamps of Brinkley, AR, hoping to spot the elusive creature. Like many bird-watchers, Johnny takes inspiration from the University of Arkansas' David Luneau, who shot video that appears to capture the bird in flight. Says artist David Sibley (The Sibley Guide to Birds), “It's probably the most sought-after bird in North America,” although he thinks Luneau's footage may actually depict the similar-looking pileated woodpecker. Johnny feels otherwise and says, “If it can make a comeback, anything can make a comeback.” Karpovsky films Jonny and Wes (Wesley Yang), a friend visiting from Oregon, over the course of several weeks as they trek through the bayou with their camouflage gear and binoculars. Karpovsky also interviews biologists, reporters, taxidermists, shop owners, law enforcement entities, and other locals who express their thoughts on the “Lord God Bird” phenomenon—a reference to the economic boost Brinkley experienced after Luneau's sighting made national news. Also featuring wistful music from composer James Lavino, Colin Greenwood of Radiohead, and Lee and Tyler Sargent of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, DVD extras include commentary from the director and Hyrns, as well as a profile of Sibley.
