Addicts have little place in their lives for anyone other than themselves, a fact that ends up devastating both spouses and other family members as they struggle to help. Produced by Mennonite Media, this unflinching, faith-based program looks at the effects of addiction on supportive loved ones while the addict is on the road to recovery. Along with hearing inspiring testimonials from brave souls who overcame their personal demons, viewers watch a family trying to cope with an addicted son who doesn't want to kick his habits—a reminder of the frustrating “perpetual state of uncertainty” that families living with drug and alcohol abusers often experience. Substance abuse also can create a high level of dysfunction within the family itself, with others adopting reactions ranging from anger and rejection to enabling and appeasing. Ultimately, the key to recovery lies in strong family recognition and acceptance of the problem, along with a commitment to seeing it through to resolution. As interviewees here testify, that approach is easier said than done (some recovered addicts mourn the loss of family relationships severed by their destructive habits), but in the best scenarios, families experience recovery, reconciliation, and healing. DVD extras include additional interview footage. Recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
