A series that takes Gen Y comedy to obnoxious heights (or depths), How I Met Your Mother is a painfully unfunny sitcom that attempts to exploit the lowest common denominator in any “humorous” situation…and nearly always succeeds. The show focuses on young and single Ted's (Josh Radnor) efforts to find true love while tagging along with his “wingman,” bar-hopping bachelor Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). Ted eventually hones in on the feisty, independent Robin (Cobie Smulders), but she doesn't necessarily share his enthusiasm for getting into a relationship. Ted's best friends, Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), represent the show's resident Happy Couple, always ready to dole out advice and act as a sounding board when their buddy starts whining. Harris, whose career has been in free-fall ever since he stopped playing Doogie Howser, is one of the most annoying sidekicks in sitcom history—and he's burdened with the most sophomoric dialogue in the entire series. Of the 22 episodes in the 2005-06 season, we can heartily recommend…none. DVD extras include audio commentaries, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and a bloopers reel. Not recommended. (E. Hulse)
