Federico Fellini followed up his second feature (the box office failure The White Sheik) with I Vitelloni, a semi-autobiographical story about five slacker males going nowhere in an Italian seaside town, that clicked with international audiences and proved to be an inspiration for later films such as Mean Streets, Breaking Away, and Diner. Thanks to the folks at Criterion, Fellini's ensemble tale of stillborn dreams has never looked better, allowing viewers to appreciate the Italian master's almost self-mocking marriage of neo-realism (a dominant style at the time) with early flashes of his dreamy, illusionist side. DVD extras include an excellent 35-minute "making-of" documentary, featuring cast, crew, and scholars. Highly recommended. (T. Keogh)
