Who would have thought that a troop of Boy Scouts from Shawnee Mission, Kansas, would produce what very likely could be the definitive video on caving. From start (where the Boy Scouts of America curiously withholds their official sanction) to finish (a look at some truly spectacular wild caves) this is a class act production and some of the producers of videos I've reviewed in the past would do well to contact Troop 381 and take instruction in how to make an interesting video. While showcasing wild caves (many vertical) in the United States, this is far from a tourist guide to caving--the focus is on preparing and guiding would-be spelunkers, and to that end, the programs looks at safety, clothing, first aid, and equipment, in addition to specific caving techniques and a reminder to respect the ecology of these natural wonders. Caving is an admittedly dangerous activity, and the Scouts (who come across as well-spoken, personable young men), emphasize several times throughout the video that caving is not for everyone. In addition to the top-notch instruction, the program includes a look at the importance of caves in American history (Did you know about FDR's 'bat bombs' during WWII?) Public libraries, especially those located in areas where caves are prevalent, will want a copy of this video. After all, where else but here can you find out if you are a "trogloxene" or not? Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Troop 381 also has available A Scouting Approach to Rock Climbing (VL-7/95) Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
