In this guide aimed at primary grade level audiences, Margaret Garland uses basic terminology as she explains drawing techniques and shows how to combine angles, curves, scribbles and zigzags to form a complete picture that tells a story. Using simple animal figures (dog, elephant, cat, parrot, fish) as a centerpiece, Ms. Garland adds details that create perspective and heighten interest, sharing the decision making process with the viewer along the way. The remarkable clarity of instruction offered in this program is enhanced by attractive graphics and close-up photography that allow viewers to follow each movement of the artist's hand. Although Ms. Garland does not have a professional presence or cultivated speaking voice, her fine teaching skills more than compensate (and elementary school art teachers might well benefit from seeing Garland in action). Highly recommended. Aud: E, P. (J. Reed)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
