Somewhat surprisingly, teens and adolescents make up the biggest age group experiencing feelings of loneliness and social isolation. This helpful program looks at possible causes, effects, and consequences of these emotions and offers simple coping strategies and skills to help reduce anxieties.
Three psychologists and six teenagers weigh in on the topic with the teens seen alone in mostly outdoor settings while talking about instances when they have felt left out, lonely, or depressed. Some teens say it’s easier to interact on their smartphones than engage in personal interactions where they feel exposed to peer criticism and judgment.
Seen in mostly talking head shots, psychologists explain that personal issues, such as moving to a new town or school, parental divorce, loss of a loved one, and seasonal changes are among the triggering factors. The experts also agree that youngsters may not have the skills to deal with mood changes and flexible emotions.
The program concludes with simple coping strategies, such as developing quality relationships, finding friends with similar interests, increasing exercise, and seeking out school counselors and other resources.
