Angie Dickinson is the host of this general introduction to the subject of health. Opening with a few daunting observations (including the fact that Americans are spending some 275 billion dollars on health care annually--or upwards of 10% of the entire Gross National Product), the program zeroes in on the experiences of writer Norman Cousins, who has successfully rebounded from two life-threatening illnesses. Cousins, the author of the best-selling The Healing Heart, emphasizes the importance of attitude in dealing with illness. He firmly believes that the will to live is linked to the brain's natural chemistry--and that the chemical secretions of the brain have a healing effect on the body. More and more doctors over the recent years have begun to subscribe to the notion of holistic treatment of the body--especially in the case of major illnesses. Cousins' remarks are here augmented by the arguments of two leading physicians who discuss chronic pain, stress, and the issue of self-responsibility in the treatment of illness. Good general information combined with Cousins' contagious optimism, make this a worthwhile program. Two other programs in the series, Cancer and Heart Attack, are also available. Beginning in 1990 these programs will be available on the home video market for $29.95 each. (Available from: Woody Clark Productions, Inc., 943 Howard St., San Francisco, CA 94103.)
