Reports of crime, drugs, violence, gangs, promiscuity, overcrowding, and the lack of moral guidance in public schools frighten many parents. While this tape offers no particular solutions to these problems, it does suggest an alternative to concerned families: home schooling. After a hard look at the situation in public schools (including the lack of Christian values and prayer), the advantages of home schooling are spelled out in terms of studies and statistics that appear to prove its effectiveness and desirability. Topics covered include making proper contacts, planning a curriculum, basic philosophies, and learning methods and procedures. The program includes advice and tips from experienced teachers and students, interviews with experts, debunking of common myths, a list of helpful contacts, and even a book review section that makes recommendations for both Christian and secular home schoolers. Although the presentation is somewhat bland and hackneyed, there is a tremendous amount of introductory information here, with lots of encouragement and suggestions for anyone interested in trying home schooling. Volume 2 promises to deal with more specifics, including the formation of a syllabus appropriate for your child's academic and ethical education. Recommended. Aud: P. (E. Druda)
