Lightyear has been releasing the how-to series of classic workout and fitness videos starring Jane Fonda in the Oscar-winner's career reinvention as a fitness queen. This one has the old Warner Home Video label remembered by a generation of VHS-analog magnetic-tape renters, plus a plug by Jane at the end to continue watching for promo summaries of her other workout tapes (this never comes). Fonda is actually absent for half of the package, as this fat-burning session —designed to tone abdominals, buttocks, and quadriceps—is split between two sessions/classes.
In a 35-minute aerobics and cardio section designed as "low-impact" (ankle weights are suggested if one wants to level up), guest instructors substitute for Fonda: Jeanne Ernst, Laurel Sparks, and Mark Burnetz (Burnetz has since gained additional visibility as an interior-design reality- TV host on the Style Network).
It starts slowly but eventually increases in speed and rhythm, so prepare to change your expectations of what is low impact. An aerobics step-bench is an optional accessory here. In a 25-minute second session, a solo Jane Fonda, presuming the viewer has suitably warmed up, does a floor workout: leg lifts for the thighs and "buns," and modified situps for the abs (reminding viewers with back issues that this particular exercise could be good for that).
No special gear is necessary for this second part. In disc format, of course, viewers can now jump directly to specific exercises, rather than fast-forwarding in the VCR, just never mind the part about promos for Fonda's entire oeuvre. Recommended as a fitness collection perennial. Aud: J, H, C, P.
