Lightyear has overseen a belated disc release of the genre-mainstay series of workout and fitness videos, sharp transfers of the VHS cassette workouts starring Jane Fonda.
This 1984 title is positioned to somewhat compliment the 2010 "Jane Fonda's Prime Time" DVD set, being of a markedly slower pace than its companion volumes, recognizing fitness needs for viewers in late middle-age and older. Even so, it is an intense affair for newcomers.
This time, in contrast to earlier tapes showing alpha-exercise queen Jane surrounded by the young and the gorgeous, a decent variety of ages and body types are represented (one of them is Shirlee Fonda, Jane's stepmother, and Henry Fonda's widow). Limbering, cardio and toning routines incorporate kegel, yoga-style, and ballet exercises; be sure to have a wooden chair handy in lieu of a barre, plus the handy mat for floor exercises.
Though Fonda's narration only makes an oblique mention of the therapeutic aspects (letting the viewer know it's okay to take a break or shake a limb if one is feeling cramped or dizzy), some of the movements are especially good for age-related sciatica or pelvic issues.
In contrast to the old analog VHS of yesteryear, the DVD format features sub-menu lists that helpfully take the home-workout enthusiast directly to workout intervals of special interest. Recommended as a collections standard, especially on shelves at institutions where senior fitness is represented. (Aud: J, H, C, P)
