As a person who has spent a fair amount of time around musicians and recording studios, I was knocked out by the breadth and depth of this modern look at the process of professionally recording audio. From a studio in Dublin, Ireland, Pro-Studio Techniques earns high marks for its expert coverage of the basics (voiceovers explaining some of the physics of sound, the mix of analog and modern digital recording techniques), as well as some of the more esoteric techniques of recording (such as layering different guitar tracks for a thick, lush sound, and the sonic differences between a fretted and fretless bass). In fact, viewers will benefit from precise overviews of nearly every process of recording--from the mechanical (tuning the drums, processing and mixing audio sources) to the finer points of audio-engineer-as-psychiatrist-for-temperamental-artists. While this well-rounded look is a perfect match for music schools, even public libraries would be hard pressed to find a single source that covers the recording process so thoroughly (actually, this video is better than many books I've read on the subject). Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: C, P. (C. Block)
