As a dedicated do-it-yourselfer, I once made the mistake of trying to reupholster a chair, and quickly learned that some things are indeed best left to professionals. For those who have yet to discover this life lesson, Olan Flick (an upholsterer with 20 years experience) methodically guides viewers through the six major (and I do mean MAJOR) steps of reupholstering--tear down, rebuilding, measuring and cutting the fabric, sewing, installation, and making the cushion. Each step features a series of clearly illustrated substeps. While marketed as a beginner's guide, considerable knowledge of sewing is necessary, as much of the vocabulary (“bias,” “seam allowance,” “darts”) is not defined. Beginners might also have appreciated a complete list of tools at the beginning of the program, rather than at the start of each section (hopefully, viewers will watch the whole video before tackling a project, but some might get quite miffed if they've torn down a chair only to learn that they need to obtain a professional pneumatic stapler before proceeding). Still, this is a clear and helpful guide that will find a ready audience in public and trade school libraries. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
