Martial arts expert Tiffany Chen is the soothing, knowledgeable instructor for this solid introduction to Yang form Tai Chi that also features a number of special options, including “mirroring” (i.e., showing the reverse image onscreen so Chen moves in exactly the same direction as the viewer), a continuous loop option to practice a particular posture until perfected, and a dual audio track with one track offering detailed instructions on breathing technique as well as additional pose coaching. Especially geared towards the beginner (although people who want to improve their skill level will also benefit), the program is divided into 11 segments employing 20 postures, including the “single whip,” “crossing hands,” “get needle at the sea bottom,” and the “roll away.” Chen presents each step-by-step movement (60 in all) in the complete Yang form style, continually emphasizing natural breathing, staying relaxed, and flowing into each new pose slowly and gracefully. The one flaw here lies in the production itself: thanks to multiple camera angles, dissolves, etc., this otherwise lovely program forces the viewer to constantly readjust their own moves while trying to mimic Chen's. Note to producers: sometimes, less is more. Recommended, with reservations. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
