Conflict is a normal part of everyday life, usually sparked by a lack of proper communication. The "student version" (the second videocassette offers a staff version) of Working It Out Together presents a simple but very effective strategy for peer mediation and counseling through realistic scenarios intercut with instructional tips and evaluation. Each situation features unique dynamics which are resolved through a five-step process that begins with the disputants stating their problem to two peer mediators--no adults are involved--and ending with a signed agreement to help prevent further conflict. The goal is not to reach total harmony or make people apologize and become best friends; simply communicating the problem and stopping the present conflict can be accomplishment enough. A peer mediation program is well worth the effort of establishing; it can empower kids while also short-circuiting problems that could become serious. Kids tend to listen to their friends and respond more honestly and openly than to adults, making this form of mediation especially effective. Great acting, good editing and structure, and a positive, motivational tone make this video set highly recommended. Aud: J, H. (E. Gieschen)
