"I love you," Beatrice Henderson tells her son John. "I know you think you do," he replies. Albert Brooks wrote, directed and stars in this dysfunctional comedy about a twice-divorced science fiction writer who reasons that he won't be able to relate to women until he resolves his maddening relationship with his mother. So, he reclaims his old room and moves back in. Debbie Reynolds, in her first starring role since 1971, makes a triumphant return to the screen as Beatrice, who drives her son to distraction by her refusal to buy any food with a brand name. Rob Morrow also stars as the son-who-mom-likes-best, but whose escalating jealousy over "the experiment" raises questions about who is the most screwed up. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
